Knowledge mapping is conducted to identify the knowledge objects that exist or is required in the environment. Each knowledge object is a unique cluster of artefacts, skills, experience, heuristics and natural talent (ASHEN) that is required to make knowledgeable decisions and act.

These knowledge objects can be used to identify initiates, such as retention of knowledge assets, development and strengthening of knowledge assets, identification of requirement to document guidelines, skills development, mentoring/shadowing, exaptive opportunities.
