DELA
A tool used for making sense, untangling problems, and telling stories. Our world is ever-changing, in a process of being & becoming, in an in between state of transition, and both focused on and impacted by humanity. DELA merges anthropology, foresight, and creativity. It is built on the premise that the way we see the world determines how we experience the world.
As an acronym, DELA stands for:
- Dynamic - systemic factors, interactions, movement, and changes
- Emergent - spontaneous, patterned, and entangled beliefs and behaviours
- Liminal - transitional states and in-between processes that feel familiar and seem strange
- Anthropocentric - focused on and impacted by humanity and life-centred design
Inspired by a song with the same name (Dela by South African band Savuka), the tool draws on the dual meaning of the word in isiZulu (a South African language): 'to be satisfied, to have had enough' on the one hand and 'to abandon, give up, sacrifice' on the other. The tool then follows with these questions:
- What do we hold on to?
- What do we let go of?
